A slightly big weekend [Wenatchee photography + design]

My baby Shade got married this weekend. We are equal parts happy for them and sad at the passage of time (well, I am, since my 45th birthday was also this weekend.) Forty-five, being ALMOST middle age, ya know. And I plan on going at LEAST to 100.

Congratulations my sweet, sweet baby, and of course, my new son-in law, Eric. We love you, we love you, we love you.

I'm sure I'll have a FEW more pics to come. It's not like I didn't have a 15 lb. camera hanging around my arm the whole day :)

Wenatchee High School Homecoming portraits

We met him at Penney's to help pick out a tie to match her dress. We were there looking for THE shoes. You know, the shoes every girl knows will complete the dress just so? We found the tie in about 10 seconds, the shoes, not so easily. In fact she ended up buying a pair of boots instead ("Mom, I've been looking for these FOR-EV-ER...") and wearing a pair she already had. He made her a special dinner, complete with candlelight, sparkling cider and "romantic music" and they both laughed when "Take My Breath Away" came on as if planned. I asked them to give me a call when they were headed to the dance and meet me in one of my favorite downtown photo spots for 10 minutes. We grabbed a few frames in the pitch dark (a first for me), had a few laughs and off they went to Homecoming. Oh to be 17 again. Or 18. Or 19. Or...you get the idea!

Leavenworth photography sneek peak: Adrian + Angela elope on Christmas

I had the honor of spending part of Christmas afternoon sharing something magical with two new friends. Adrian and Angela eloped on Christmas day to the winter wonderland village of Leavenworth, WA. Amidst the fairy-tale backdrop that was the Run of the River Inn, they exchanged vows in a very intimate setting, so small that I was the witness! It was sweet and romantic and perfectly suited these two relaxed and very in-love people. A vintage typewriter sat on the quaint desk in the suite and on it I spied a wonderful story penned (typed!) by Adrian about the day's activities. A wonderful momento from the perfect setting for the perfect start to their married life together. Thank you Angela for seeking me out to share this part of your life together!

Before and After: Wenatchee couple portrait

Two weeks in a row! I'm on a roll. Kaiser please. Anywho...

For this photo I was directing my valuable assistant and VAL (voice activated light) to cast a little light their direction. It was getting pretty late, nearly 8:30 pm, and being in a dugout, I needed the assist to keep the faces out of shadow. In retrospect, I could have (should have?) put a reflector behind her to pop a little more light onto his face. As it goes though, I like the result as her laughing expression is really the point and that's where the light falls. I made a few adjustments in Adobe Camera RAW to crop a tiny bit and straighten for better composition. In Photoshop I decided to just "play" with this photo and tried a whole lot of different things. In the end the stuff I kept were a black and white adjustment layer that I lowered to tone the color down, Topaz Adjustment filter on "Photo Pop", lowered to 75%, a warm photo filter for, yea, you guessed it, warmth, highlight and shadow separator actions from TRA actions, highlight recovery in Photoshop, a bit of noise reduction on the blue channel in LAB mode, and finally the Lux (soft) action at 90%, also from TRA. Phew, that's a lot, and not something I would do for a whole event's worth of photos, but it was fun to play around and do something a little different.
